The Secretary bird is one of Africa's most powerful, yet most unusual birds. These tall feathered statues, with spiky crowns upon their heads, spend their days moving slowly through the grasslands of Africa, looking for movement within the long grass. Their latin name, sagitarius serpentarius, translates to "hunter" and thereafter links to the prey that these birds are best at hunting: snakes and reptiles. Their weapon? Long legs and razor sharp claws made to stamp on anything with ease! This moment of pre-flight was a particularly special capture, as even though these birds can fly, they spend most of their lives firmly on the ground.⁠..⁠

The impala is certainly not the most elusive of Africa's animals, as they are literally peppered all over the plains! These spritely antelope are so great in numbers that they are essentially a live buffet for passing predators... However, even though they are a common menu item, Mother Nature was not all cruel and gave them a fighting chance when it came to prey vs hunter. They possess the ability to jump up to three meters high and can flee danger with immense speed; a lucky packet of natural gifts to level the playing field.⁠..⁠

High up in the trees of Tanzania, top stealthy predators like this leopard can be found resting and re-energizing before their next wilderness excursion. In these sky-touching treetops they can escape the sting of the hot African earth, keep their prized kills safe and look out over the plains to see what they can spot... In this moment, one can see just how powerful the jaws of this big cat are! In the same stride, one can also see just how exhausting it must be to hoist a roughly 27kg carcass up a tree trunk with only its mouth, after likely traversing around 20km during the day!

To mark National Marine Week here in South Africa, let's look to our wild oceans for some more photographic excellence! The Great white shark is one of the most deadly predators in southern African waters, with the ability to launch its 1700lb body high out of the bracing waters to try and grab unsuspecting seals on the surface. These hunting scenes are pure chaos to the naked eye; water splattering, sharp teeth shining and seals flailing. Therefore, to be able to slow it down and capture even just one moment, is truly jaw(s) dropping...⁠
